Wallet of Satoshi x Spark - Self-Custody Lightning Is So Back

4 min read

Wallet of Satoshi is now live on Spark, bringing a self-custodial Lightning experience to their users for the first time. This marks a major step forward in making Lightning more scalable, seamless, and accessible—especially in the U.S. market.

When we first introduced Spark, we quietly rolled out an early beta to a small group of partners. Wallet of Satoshi was one of those teams we were especially excited about, given their deep expertise and impressive track record in Bitcoin.

At the time, Spark was still super early, but the Wallet of Satoshi team didn't seem to mind. They immediately saw the potential and pushed us to build something real. We can confidently say they've been a key driver in taking Spark from zero to one. They shaped a big part of our wallet SDK, constantly gave us thoughtful feedback, and kept us honest every step of the way.

Time for Beta!

Wallet of Satoshi has officially begun rolling out a beta version of their self-custodial Lightning wallet. With Spark, they're now able to offer their users a truly self-custodial Lightning experience, giving people full control over their Bitcoin. Anyone will soon be able to send and receive Bitcoin with the smoothest user experience out there. This integration unlocks several exciting opportunities, most notably, the ability to re-enter and serve the U.S. market.

We'll continue building out new features together as the product evolves. If you're interested in joining the beta, drop a comment on our X post.

Why Spark?

Building a self-custodial Lightning wallet can feel like mission impossible, we’ve learned that firsthand. We’ve run into wall after wall trying to scale Lightning across different use cases.

Wallet of Satoshi is one of the largest, if not the largest, Lightning wallets in the world. And even with their scale and expertise, they ran into the same fundamental limitations we’ve seen time and again. The core issue? Lightning wasn’t built with self-custody in mind. Liquidity requirements, node complexity, and channel management costs all pile up fast especially when you try to make it seamless for users.

We built Spark specifically to solve this exact problem. Spark abstracts away all the complexity for wallets looking to implement Lightning. You don’t need to spin up channels, worry about routing, pre-fund liquidity, or even think about managing nodes. Creating a Lightning wallet on Spark takes just 6 lines of code.

What’s most impressive? It’s completely invisible from the wallet experience. Users won't even notice Spark powering their wallet, and that’s exactly how we think infrastructure should be.
